Her experience, particularly in overseeing HR and talent activities for EY’s Tax and Law sectors in the UK and Ireland, positions her perfectly to steer Burges Salmon’s people-first strategy towards new heights.
Alice’s early career as a client-facing consultant in KPMG’s people and change advisory practice, coupled with her academic credentials, including an MBA from INSEAD Business School, underlines her well-rounded expertise in shaping workforce dynamics and culture.
Her new role at Burges Salmon involves leading the firm’s People strategy across its vibrant workforce of over a thousand professionals spread across Bristol, Edinburgh, and London. Alice’s primary focus will be on reinforcing the firm’s position as an employer of choice in the legal sector, ensuring the recruitment, development, and retention of top-tier talent. Moreover, she is tasked with advancing the firm’s diversity and inclusion and social mobility goals, underpinning Burges Salmon’s commitment to being a responsible business.
Alice Bretherton expressed her enthusiasm about joining Burges Salmon, citing the firm’s authenticity, unique culture, and commitment to long-lasting relationships as key differentiators in the market. “The first thing that really struck me about Burges Salmon was its authenticity in terms of its values and unique culture, which are both clearly at the core of the firm’s overarching vision and purpose,” Alice remarked. She praised the firm’s genuine dedication to its values and its responsible business agenda, committing to embody these principles in her new role.
Alice succeeds the esteemed Robert Halton, whose retirement marks the end of a significant chapter for Burges Salmon.

Bull also extended his gratitude to Robert Halton for his considerable contributions and collaborative spirit during his tenure at the firm. “Alice brings with her a huge amount of experience and expertise in delivering successful people-led strategies across the professional services sector and we’re excited to welcome an individual of her calibre to the firm,” Bull stated, heralding a new era of strategic talent management at Burges Salmon.
