Prof. D.P. Singh Appointed as Chancellor of Tata Institute of Social Sciences

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has announced the appointment of Prof. D.P. Singh as the Honorable Chancellor for a five-year term, an appointment made by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Prof. Singh, a distinguished figure in Indian academia, takes over this prestigious role backed by a rich history of leadership in higher education.

Profound Academic Leadership

Prof. Singh’s academic journey is marked by his significant contributions to higher education in India. Having formerly chaired the University Grants Commission (UGC) from 2018 to 2021, he presided over 8 inter-university centers as President of the UGC Governing Council. His tenure in various capacities—including as Vice-Chancellor at Banaras Hindu University, Dr. Harisingh Gour University, and Devi Ahilya University, as well as Director of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)—underscores his expertise and commitment to educational excellence.

Throughout his career, Prof. Singh has been an integral part of various key educational panels, including the Central Advisory Board of Education, Indian Council for Cultural Relations, and the Implementation Committee of National Education Policy-2020, among others. His experience extends beyond national borders, having been instrumental in handling international projects and enhancing global cooperation in higher education.

In his new role, Prof. Singh is set to advance TISS’s mission to foster an inclusive, sustainable, and just society through education. “I am thrilled to lead TISS and build on its distinguished legacy by promoting holistic, multidisciplinary, and technologically enhanced education that adheres to the highest standards of academic and administrative excellence,” said Prof. Singh. He has also been recognized with several prestigious awards, reflecting his leadership in transforming educational paradigms.
