Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa, November 2025 — Charles Molapisi has been appointed as Group Chief Technology and Information Officer (CTIO) at MTN Group, Africa’s largest mobile network operator. In his new role, Charles will lead MTN’s global technology and information strategy, driving digital transformation, innovation, and operational excellence across the Group’s 16 markets.
Charles returns to the Group CTIO position after a remarkable tenure as Chief Executive Officer of MTN South Africa, where he led one of the continent’s most competitive telecom markets for nearly four years. His leadership during this period was marked by a strong focus on network modernization, customer experience, and financial growth, reinforcing MTN South Africa’s position as a leading digital operator.
Before his CEO role, Charles previously served as Group Chief Technology and Information Officer from 2019 to 2022, where he oversaw the Group’s strategic technology roadmap. He championed advancements in 5G readiness, digital ecosystem expansion, and data-driven innovation that strengthened MTN’s market leadership across Africa and the Middle East.
Earlier, Charles was the CEO and Board Member at MTN Zambia, where his leadership transformed the operation into one of MTN’s top-performing markets. Under his guidance, MTN Zambia achieved record service revenue growth, led customer experience (NPS) rankings, and significantly diversified revenue streams — notably increasing Mobile Money revenue contribution from 0.5% to 14% and growing MoMo subscribers from 115,000 to 1.6 million.
Charles also served as Chief Information Officer at MTN Nigeria, where he managed one of the Group’s largest IT portfolios. His tenure was defined by a relentless focus on customer-centric innovation, agile transformation, and technology integration, helping MTN Nigeria strengthen its digital and data capabilities. Prior to his MTN journey, he spent over six years at Telkom SA and earlier at Liberty Group South Africa, where he built a strong foundation in technology management, data systems, and enterprise integration.
Charles holds a Master’s in Business Leadership (MBL) from the University of South Africa (UNISA) School of Business Leadership, a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and has completed executive education programs at Harvard Business School, Columbia Business School, and INSEAD, specializing in strategy, finance, and competitive advantage.
