Stanford, California, United States, April 2025 – Terrance Mayes has stepped into a new role as Chief Human Resources Officer and Associate Dean at Stanford University School of Medicine, continuing his distinguished leadership journey within the institution. In his new role, he will oversee the School of Medicine’s HR strategy, talent development, organizational effectiveness, and employee experience to support one of the world’s premier academic medical centers.
Prior to this appointment, Terrance served as Associate Dean and Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives at the School of Medicine. In this capacity, he was instrumental in leading cross-functional initiatives that supported institutional transformation and equity-driven innovation across education, research, and health care operations.
He also held a concurrent role as Head of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging at Stanford Cancer Institute, where he helped advance inclusive culture-building and equity-focused strategy development. His efforts emphasized fostering a sense of belonging and aligning diversity practices with institutional excellence.
Earlier, Terrance served as Associate Dean for Equity and Strategic Initiatives at Stanford Health Care, as well as Executive Director of the Stanford Medicine Commission on Justice and Equity, where he led numerous equity-focused programs that addressed systemic barriers and promoted access to health innovation and academic success.
Before rejoining Stanford, he served as Associate Vice Chancellor of Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer at UC Irvine Health, leading the university’s first health system-wide DEI office. He previously held multiple academic and student affairs leadership roles at UC San Diego, and began his career in educational programming and administration in K-12 and higher education environments.
