The U.S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) has announced the appointment of Michelle Heintz as its new Chief Human Resources Officer, effective March 18. Heintz, a seasoned HR executive, brings over 20 years of transformative leadership experience across a spectrum of industries to her new role at PPPL.
“Our Lab is transforming, growing in both size and scope, requiring a heightened emphasis on our most valued resources — our people and our culture,” stated Steve Cowley, Laboratory director. “Michelle brings extensive experience and embodies the skills and values we need for the next chapter of PPPL. We’re delighted to bring someone of her caliber on board.”
Heintz’s arrival at PPPL comes at a crucial time as the laboratory embarks on a journey of expansion and transformation, emphasizing the importance of cultivating a dynamic and inclusive workplace culture. “I am truly honored and excited to join PPPL as chief HR officer, particularly at this pivotal moment of transformation for the Lab,” Heintz expressed. “Steve’s recognition of the importance of prioritizing our people and culture resonates deeply with me. I am eager to leverage my experience and values to cultivate a workplace environment where every individual feels valued, supported, and motivated to contribute to the Lab’s success.”
In her previous role at QuidelOrtho, Heintz was instrumental in developing strategies and policies that fostered an engaged and productive global workforce. As senior director of global human resources and employee relations, she played a pivotal role in navigating major organizational shifts, including divestiture, an IPO, and an acquisition, through strategic HR initiatives and collaboration with executive leadership.
Heintz’s tenure in the R&D sector has honed her ability to understand and support innovation-driven environments. “Being a member of these R&D leadership teams not only allowed me to develop a deep understanding of the intricacies of the R&D landscape but also equipped me with the capabilities to successfully collaborate with R&D leaders and their teams,” said Heintz, underscoring her commitment to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
Throughout her distinguished career, including a 23-year stint at Johnson & Johnson, Heintz has established herself as a change agent with a people-first focus. Her efforts in organizational transformation, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) initiatives, and culture building have been widely recognized and celebrated.
Michelle Heintz’s extensive experience in regulated environments, particularly with federal agencies, positions her as an ideal leader to navigate PPPL’s complex regulatory landscape while maintaining the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct.
Heintz’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and HR Management from Saint Elizabeth University. Her leadership at PPPL is expected to drive sustainable growth and enhance performance by aligning the Laboratory’s mission and vision with strategic organizational development initiatives.
