Lagos, Nigeria, February 2025 – Mdundo, a leading music streaming service in sub-Saharan Africa, has appointed Sowari Akosionu as its Chief Marketing Officer (CMO). She previously served as Head of Marketing & Partnerships, Africa, where she played a pivotal role in the company’s expansion across the continent.
In a statement, the company highlighted Akosionu’s instrumental contributions in spearheading high-impact marketing initiatives and leveraging strategic partnerships with telecommunications companies to drive user growth. As CMO, she will lead Mdundo’s marketing and growth strategy, strengthening the platform’s position as the leading digital music service for Africa’s mass-market consumers.

Before stepping into the CMO role, Sowari Akosionu served as Head of Marketing & Partnerships, Africa, where she focused on revenue diversification, user growth, and brand positioning. She also developed strategic partnerships that expanded Mdundo’s reach and boosted revenue streams.
Previously, she was Head of Telco Products, Africa, optimizing telecommunication partnerships and driving subscription growth for Mdundo’s premium music services. She led initiatives aimed at achieving 10 million paid subscribers by 2025 and increasing the premium segment’s contribution to overall revenue.
Prior to joining Mdundo, she held multiple roles at 9mobile, where she managed media planning and digital marketing strategies. Her tenure at Etisalat Nigeria saw her drive customer experience improvements, digital marketing campaigns, and search engine optimization efforts. She also worked at Globacom, managing retail sales and trade partner relationships.
Akosionu holds an MBA in Strategic Marketing from Warwick Business School and an Executive Education Certification in Digital Marketing & Customer Analytics from Imperial College Business School.
