Dr. Sunil Singh, Editor-In-Chief, HR TODAY: Hi Dwaipayan, Good to see you today on Monday Mantra. My question for you is, what is the suggestion to the people who have lost their jobs?
Dwaipayan Guha, Head of HR & Admin – Water Business Unit, Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL): Sunil, that’s a great question. Job loss can be one of the most traumatic and difficult events in anybody’s life. And in this current, rather turbulent, difficult situation that we have in the tech world, a lot of people are losing their jobs, and different people have got different capacity to handle this kind of trauma in their life.
Having said this, a lot of people go through denial and they tell themselves that this cannot happen to me. This is for somebody else. But then, the first thing one has to do is one has to accept the situation that it has happened to me. If you recall now, 20 years back when the dot-com boom busted, at that point in time, there was a psychological survey that was done and it was found out that people who had a rather, you know, smooth life,
they found it very difficult to accept and come out of that situation, and they fared worse off than people who have gone through setbacks in life. Because they have seen setbacks in life, they could rebound faster. Now, if one is in an unfortunate situation of, you know, losing a job, the first thing, first thing is that one has to accept the situation.
Reassess what the skills are and what the potentials in the market are, and then probably use that time to upgrade themselves, see what the market is valuing right now, and retrain themselves, learn as much as possible, number one. Number two is, one should spend time on networking. That’s very key. I mean, a lot of times people get into, you know, their own shell and they withdraw themselves from the social space.
But it’s very important that one should stay connected, be visible, and keep engaging with people, with different professionals. And third is obviously, you should take this time to learn new skills, upgrade yourself. I think the most important thing one has to understand is that this is not the end of life.
Dwaipayan Guha, Head of HR & Admin – Water Business Unit, Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL): I mean, like, I’m sure people can reinvent themselves and do a great job. Thank you.
