Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, December 2025 – The Government of India, via the Ministry of Finance, has appointed R. Chander as Managing Director of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), effective December 1, 2025. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as Executive Director (Investment – Front Office) and Chief Investment Officer (CIO) at LIC. His elevation comes at a critical time for LIC as the insurance giant navigates evolving market dynamics and regulatory expectations.
R. Chander’s association with LIC spans over three decades — he joined the company in 1990 as an Assistant Administrative Officer after completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Management and becoming a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India. Over the years, he rose through a variety of operational and leadership roles: as Senior Divisional Manager in the Nagpur and Hyderabad divisions; Regional Manager (Marketing) for the South Zone; and Regional Manager (Pension & Group Schemes) for the South-Central Zone.
In due course, he headed LIC’s Strategic Business Unit for International Operations as Executive Director, before moving to investment and fund-management responsibilities. On June 5, 2025, he was appointed as CIO — overseeing LIC’s investment strategies and portfolios, underlining his expertise in fund management and regulatory compliance. As CIO and Investment Front Office Head, he became one of LIC’s key managerial personnel.
With his appointment as Managing Director, R. Chander now joins the senior leadership of LIC. His long tenure, deep institutional knowledge, investment acumen, and diversified experience across operations, marketing, pensions, group schemes, and international business make him well-equipped to contribute to LIC’s strategic direction and financial resilience.
