Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, August 2025 — Alex Varty, CPA, has assumed the role of Interim Chief Financial Officer at Burcon NutraScience Corporation, stepping up from his ongoing position as Controller. With over 1 year and 7 months in that role, Alex brings continuity, financial insight, and leadership at a pivotal time for the company as it continues to advance its position in the plant-based protein industry.
Alex’s journey includes hands-on financial leadership across diverse sectors. Before joining Burcon, he served as Controller at Western Restaurant Franchises Inc., ensuring operational finance integrity across a restaurant chain. Before that, he was Financial Reporting Manager at General Fusion, where he led financial reporting for clean energy innovation. His prior experience includes over five years at KPMG Canada, where, as Senior Manager, Audit, he modernized audit operations by integrating data analytics tools such as Alteryx, Power BI, Tableau, and Caseware IDEA and worked with ERP systems including SAP and Microsoft Dynamics. Early in his career, Alex held accounting roles at Deutsche Bank (Credit Structuring and Structured Solutions), and earlier experience at KPMG Canada in tax, rounding out a versatile financial foundation.
Alex holds a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Chartered Professional Accountancy from the University of Waterloo, blending scientific and accounting expertise. He earned his CPA (Canada) designation in 2020, achieving National Honour Roll status on the Common Final Examination. He also completed a Graduate Certificate in Accounting with Digital Analytics at Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business, equipping him with advanced analytical skills in finance.
At Burcon, Alex will guide financial operations, reporting, and strategy during the interim leadership period, supporting the company’s vision of delivering next-generation, sustainable plant-based protein solutions worldwide.
