Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, March 2025 – Angus Cadden has been appointed as the new Chief Operating Officer, People at Rio Tinto, marking a significant step forward in the company’s global HR leadership. In his new role, Cadden will lead the people function across Rio Tinto’s expansive international operations, focusing on workforce strategy, HR service excellence, and driving cultural transformation across the organization.
Cadden brings over 16 years of experience at Rio Tinto, where he has steadily progressed through a range of leadership positions. Most recently, he served as Vice President People, Minerals, where he partnered with the Group Executive for Minerals and led HR strategy across a globally distributed workforce of over 10,000 employees spanning regions including Australia, Canada, the United States, China, Argentina, South Africa, the UK, Europe, and Madagascar. He previously held the role of Vice President People, Group Functions & Technical, supporting global teams across multiple corporate and technical functions.

Earlier in his Rio Tinto journey, Cadden also led as General Manager, HR for Group Functions, as well as General Manager HR for the Coal division, and held senior business partner roles supporting major capital projects and productivity improvement across Australasia. His broad and deep experience across functional and operational HR roles makes him uniquely positioned to guide Rio Tinto’s people strategy during a time of transformation and sustainability-driven innovation.
