Cincinnati, Ohio, United States, November 2025 — Jim Clendenen has been appointed as Group Vice President & Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Kroger, one of the world’s largest retailers. In his new leadership role, Jim will oversee enterprise-wide technology strategy, digital transformation, and information systems innovation across Kroger’s vast retail ecosystem, supporting nearly half a million associates and over 11 million customers served daily.
Jim has been a part of Kroger for over eight years, most recently serving as Vice President of Enterprise Retail Systems, where he led large-scale digital modernization efforts across the company’s technology platforms. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing retail technology capabilities, enabling data-driven decision-making, and strengthening the customer experience through seamless integration of physical and digital retail operations.
Before rejoining Kroger, Jim served as Chief Information Officer at Harris Teeter, where he oversaw technology transformation initiatives that enhanced operational efficiency and customer engagement across the grocery chain. During his nearly nine-year tenure, he was pivotal in aligning IT strategy with business growth objectives and optimizing technology investments across retail systems.
Earlier in his career, Jim held the position of Chief Information Officer at Bashas’ Family of Stores, where he led the information technology function and enterprise transformation programs that modernized systems and improved supply chain performance. His leadership ensured the organization’s adaptability in an evolving retail environment.
Jim’s first chapter at Kroger, spanning more than 12 years, saw him rise through the ranks from retail store associate to Project Director. Working across operating divisions like Quality Food Centers (QFC) and Fred Meyer, Inc., he gained extensive hands-on experience in retail operations, merchandising, and IT management. His journey through Kroger’s frontline and corporate environments shaped his deep understanding of how technology drives business outcomes in retail.
Jim holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Seattle University, where he developed a strong foundation in business strategy, leadership, and technology management.
