The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a cornerstone of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is proud to announce Kevin Stine as the new Director of its Information Technology Laboratory (ITL). Stine’s leadership in ITL, a key research entity within NIST, marks a pivotal step forward in the pursuit of excellence in information technology measurement, testing, and standards.
Previously serving as the Chief of ITL’s Applied Cybersecurity Division, Stine was instrumental in the creation and development of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. This framework has garnered international acclaim as a premier source of cybersecurity guidelines, further solidifying NIST’s role in enhancing national and economic security through IT innovations.
Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and NIST Director Laurie E. Locascio expressed enthusiasm for Stine’s appointment, highlighting his extensive experience and exceptional leadership abilities. “Kevin brings a wealth of experience to this position, along with a proven track record of success,” Locascio said. “He spearheaded the development of NIST’s Cybersecurity Framework, one of the world’s leading sources of cybersecurity guidance, and he has expanded several programs critical to national and economic security.”
The ITL, with over 600 staff and guest researchers, is dedicated to fostering trust in IT through rigorous measurement science, fundamental and applied research in computer science, mathematics, statistics, systems engineering, and cybersecurity and privacy. Stine’s role will be crucial in guiding the ITL’s endeavors to meet the evolving challenges in these fields.
Stine’s journey to this esteemed position began at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where he served as the agency’s first chief information security officer. His efforts were foundational in establishing the FDA’s cybersecurity program. Stine’s career also includes valuable experience in the private sector prior to his contributions at the FDA and NIST.
A University of Maryland, Baltimore County alumnus, Stine’s educational background in information systems management has been the bedrock of his distinguished career in information security and technology.
Kevin Stine’s leadership at the helm of NIST’s ITL is anticipated to drive forward the laboratory’s mission to advance measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.
