Gemma Martin Named Chief People Officer at UNSW

Kensington, NSW, Australia May 2024 – The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is delighted to welcome Gemma Martin as the new Chief People Officer. With over 18 years of human resources experience across various industries, Gemma is poised to lead the university’s HR initiatives and contribute to its mission of driving positive global impact.

Gemma expressed her excitement, saying, “I’m excited to share that I’m starting a new position as Chief People Officer at UNSW! I have met many amazing people as I have gone through the recruitment process for this role, and am excited to work with such a passionate group of people who are literally changing the world through their work.”

Prior to joining UNSW, Gemma served as Chief People Officer and General Manager of People, Culture & Safety at Sydney Water. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, she led a comprehensive portfolio spanning people partnering, workforce strategy, safety and wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, and business improvement.

From May 2019 to February 2022, Gemma was the General Manager of People & Culture at Downer, where she managed HR operations for the North Ryde-based organization. Before that, she was Vice President of Human Resources for the Americas region at Treasury Wine Estates, leading HR initiatives from September 2017 to April 2019.

Gemma also served as Director of Human Resources at Dignity Health from July 2015 to July 2016, where she developed strategic HR plans and supported leaders in driving change and enhancing employee engagement. At BlueScope, she held roles such as Vice President of Human Resources (2012–2015) and HR Manager (2011–2012), focusing on workforce planning, organizational development, and employee engagement.
