New Jersey, United States | July 2026: Merck has announced the appointment of Gaurav Gupta as Executive Vice President and Chief Information & Digital Officer (CIDO). He joined the company in July 2026 and will officially assume the role on September 1, 2026, succeeding Dave Williams, who is retiring after a distinguished tenure leading the company’s digital transformation.
In his new role, Gaurav will lead Merck’s global information technology and digital strategy, overseeing the continued evolution of artificial intelligence, enterprise data, digital platforms, cybersecurity, and technology innovation. He will play a pivotal role in accelerating digital transformation across the organization, enabling scientific innovation, operational excellence, and business growth while supporting Merck’s purpose of saving and improving lives around the world.
Prior to joining Merck, Gaurav spent more than 27 years at Ernst & Young (EY), including over 16 years as a Partner/Principal in the firm’s Life Sciences Digital practice based in New York. As a Senior Partner, he led high-performing global teams that designed and implemented AI-powered digital transformation programs across the pharmaceutical and life sciences value chain, helping organizations unlock measurable business outcomes through advanced technology, data, and digital innovation.
Earlier in his career at EY, he served as Senior Manager, where he built deep expertise in enterprise technology consulting, digital transformation, business strategy, information systems, and large-scale technology implementation for global clients.
Before beginning his consulting career, Gaurav worked as an Assistant Manager at Sundaram Finance, gaining early experience in financial services, business operations, and technology-enabled business transformation.
Across a career spanning nearly three decades, Gaurav has established himself as a respected leader in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, enterprise technology, data strategy, business modernization, information systems, and technology-driven innovation within the global healthcare and life sciences sector. His appointment reinforces Merck’s commitment to accelerating AI, digital capabilities, and technology-led innovation across its global operations.
Gaurav Gupta earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance and Management Information Systems (MIS) from Ohio University, providing a strong academic foundation that has supported his leadership at the intersection of business strategy, technology, and digital transformation.
