She will partner closely with executive leadership to ensure the organization continues attracting, developing, and retaining exceptional talent while supporting its growing international impact in energy research and climate intelligence.

Prior to her promotion, Liz served as Director of People & Culture, where she led strategic initiatives to strengthen organizational culture, employee engagement, leadership capability, and people systems across the globally distributed organization. Before that, she served as Human Resources Manager, establishing modern HR practices, talent processes, and people programs that supported Global Energy Monitor’s continued growth and mission-driven culture.

Alongside her corporate leadership responsibilities, Liz has served for more than a decade as an Adjunct Instructor in the School of Social Work at Appalachian State University, teaching courses in social work practice, social welfare policy, and community and organizational development, reflecting her longstanding commitment to education and leadership development.

Before joining Global Energy Monitor, Liz spent more than four years at Appalachian State University, where she held progressively senior roles within the Office of Title IX Compliance. She served as Civil Rights Investigator (Employee Relations & Learning and Development), leading workplace investigations involving harassment, discrimination, Title IX, and Title VII matters while designing and delivering learning and development programs for thousands of students and employees.

During this period, she also served as Interim Director of the Office of Title IX Compliance, overseeing departmental operations, supervising staff, strengthening onboarding processes, and ensuring compliance with federal regulations and university policies. Earlier, she worked as Title IX and Equal Opportunity Investigator and Interim Case Manager supporting crisis response, employee relations, policy implementation, and organizational effectiveness.

Liz also worked as a Human Resources Training Consultant with People 2.0, developing performance management training and HRIS implementation resources, and previously served on the leadership team at OASIS Inc., where she supported recruitment, onboarding, volunteer management, grant development, and performance management within the nonprofit sector.

Her earlier career included roles with the University of Minnesota, the Somali Health Coalition of Minnesota, Ascension Place, AmeriCorps, the International Labor Rights Forum, and YouthWorks, building extensive experience across human resources, community development, education, refugee support, nonprofit leadership, employee relations, compliance, research, and organizational development.

Across more than 17 years of leadership experience, Liz has developed expertise in Strategic Human Resources, People & Culture, Employee Relations, Organizational Development, Learning & Development, Talent Acquisition, Performance Management, Leadership Development, Compliance, Workplace Investigations, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Crisis Management, Organizational Effectiveness, Change Management, and Nonprofit Leadership.

Education: Liz Mason holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) in Community Practice from the University of Minnesota, providing a strong foundation in organizational development, community leadership, social systems, and people-centered change management.
