National Gallery Singapore and Singapore Art Museum Welcome Dr Eugene Tan as New CEO

In a significant development for Singapore’s art scene, Dr Eugene Tan has been appointed the Chief Executive Officer of National Gallery Singapore and Singapore Art Museum, starting from 1 April 2024. This new chapter begins as he takes over the reins from Ms Chong Siak Ching, who retires after a decade of distinguished service.

Dr Tan, previously serving as the Director for both prestigious institutions, is celebrated for his critical role in elevating Singapore’s stature within the global art community. His tenure as Director since 2013 (Gallery) and 2019 (SAM) has been marked by numerous achievements, including the curation of groundbreaking exhibitions and forging partnerships with world-renowned museums. These efforts have not only spotlighted Southeast Asian art but also facilitated engaging dialogues across international borders.

“Dr Tan’s dedication and innovative approach have significantly shaped our visual arts landscape, making him the ideal leader to build on the strong foundation laid by Ms Chong Siak Ching,” stated Mr Edmund Cheng, Chairman of the Singapore Art Museum. Under Dr Tan’s stewardship, both institutions are expected to soar to new heights, continuing to offer enriching and diverse experiences to art enthusiasts.

Ms Chong Siak Ching’s tenure is honored for her visionary leadership and commitment to making art accessible to all, a legacy that Dr Tan is poised to continue and expand upon. Her efforts have been instrumental in transforming the Gallery and SAM into key cultural landmarks that celebrate the richness of Southeast Asian modern art.

Mr Peter Ho, Chairman of National Gallery Singapore, expressed his confidence in Dr Tan’s appointment, highlighting his successful track record and the impactful exhibitions under his direction that have presented Southeast Asian art in a new light. Dr Tan’s leadership is anticipated to further enhance the global recognition of Singapore and Southeast Asian artists.

Dr Tan expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, emphasizing his commitment to advancing the recognition of Southeast Asian art and engaging the public with meaningful art experiences. His vision includes expanding the reach and impact of both museums, ensuring they continue to play a crucial role in the international art scene.
