Kolkata, West Bengal, India, July 2025 — Asheesh Kumar has been appointed as Director (Business Development) at Coal India Limited (CIL) for a term of five years or until superannuation, whichever is earlier. His appointment underscores CIL’s strategic emphasis on leadership with deep operational insight to navigate India’s evolving energy ecosystem.
Kumar brings with him over 31 years of rich experience in coal mining and large-scale operational leadership. He has played a critical role in enhancing performance at the Ashoka Opencast Coal Mining Project, driving production efficiency and implementing advanced blast design and equipment utilization. His career at CIL includes tenure as Superintendent of Mines, Senior Mining Engineer, and General Manager, where he managed teams of over 900 and achieved record production and safety benchmarks.
In his new board-level role, Kumar will spearhead strategic business initiatives, including diversification into emerging energy sectors, sustainability-focused ventures, and international collaborations. His prior experience with Sesa Goa Ltd. and collaborations with DGMS and CMRI on safety and innovation projects further bolster his credentials.
An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, Kumar holds a First-Class Mines Manager Certificate and is the recipient of the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for Excellence in Mining by Coal India Limited—an honour that recognizes his dedication to innovation and safe mining practices.
