American Management Association Research Highlights Gender and Age Disparities in Hybrid Work Impact on Career Development

NEW YORK, USA, April 23, 2024 — The American Management Association (AMA) has released findings from a new survey of 1,000 US knowledge workers that explores the nuances of remote and hybrid work environments on employee development, advancement, and success. The survey comes as the hybrid work model, accelerated by the pandemic, shows strong signs of becoming a permanent fixture.

Uncovering Disparities in Hybrid Work Environments

The AMA’s research indicates significant gender and age disparities in how office-based work is perceived and its benefits to career progression. According to the survey, 52% of men aged 25 to 34 who are in the office at least four days a week believe that it significantly aids their career development, compared to only 30% of women in the same age group.

For older employees, men aged 35 to 44 report that office work provides greater visibility to senior leaders (50% vs. 37%) and increased job satisfaction (40% vs. 27%) compared to their female counterparts. These findings suggest that while hybrid work has enhanced the quality of life for many—73% of all respondents noted an improvement—it may also be perpetuating traditional workplace inequities.

The Role of Leadership in Bridging the Gap

“Managers and leaders need to ensure their organization’s employees—regardless of gender and workplace environments—are being developed, coached and given opportunities for advancement equitably,” said Manny Avramidis, President & Chief Executive Officer of AMA. This call to action highlights the need for intentional leadership to address and correct the disparities that hybrid work environments may exacerbate.

The survey also found that remote work could impede team rapport, with 51% of those working remotely at least once a week feeling it hinders building connections with colleagues, a sentiment that increases among daily office-goers (67%).

Moving Forward: Equitable Opportunities for All

As the work landscape continues to evolve, the AMA underscores the importance of providing all employees with equal access to training and mentoring opportunities, regardless of their work location. This approach not only promotes fairness but also supports the development of a high-performing, competitive organization.
