Cambridge, England, United Kingdom, July 2026 — AstraZeneca has appointed Sobi Velauthapillai as Global Marketing Director, marking another significant milestone in an accomplished career spanning nearly two decades with the global biopharmaceutical company.
In his new global leadership role, Velauthapillai will be responsible for shaping worldwide marketing strategy, driving commercial excellence, accelerating global brand growth, supporting product lifecycle management, and advancing AstraZeneca’s mission of delivering innovative medicines to patients worldwide.
His appointment follows a distinguished progression through multiple commercial, marketing, sales, and regional leadership roles across North America, Europe, and global markets.
Most recently, Velauthapillai served as EUCAN Regional Commercial Director, based in Switzerland, where he led commercial strategy and execution across the Europe and Canada (EUCAN) region. In this role, he partnered with cross-functional leadership teams to accelerate business performance, strengthen regional capabilities, and deliver sustainable commercial growth across diverse healthcare markets.
Prior to that, he was Franchise Head – Biologics Alliance in Canada, leading strategic partnerships, franchise growth, portfolio management, and commercialization initiatives across AstraZeneca’s biologics business.
Earlier, as Director – Respiratory Biologics Alliance, he played a pivotal role in advancing commercial strategy, alliance management, and market expansion for AstraZeneca’s respiratory biologics portfolio.
His commercial leadership journey also includes serving as Regional Sales Manager – BioRespiratory, where he led high-performing sales teams focused on respiratory therapies while driving customer engagement and market growth.
Before assuming regional leadership responsibilities, Velauthapillai held several increasingly senior marketing positions across AstraZeneca’s respiratory portfolio, including Senior Marketing Manager – SYMBICORT, Senior Marketing Manager – Future Portfolio Launch Strategy (Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity), Product Manager – TUDORZA, and Marketing Manager – Symbicort, where he contributed to brand strategy, product launches, lifecycle management, commercial planning, market development, and customer engagement.
Earlier in his career, he transitioned into marketing through AstraZeneca’s oncology business, serving first as Insights Manager – Oncology and previously as Market Research Specialist – Oncology, developing deep expertise in commercial insights, market analytics, competitive intelligence, customer understanding, and evidence-based strategic planning.
Before joining AstraZeneca, Velauthapillai worked as a Sales Representative with Vision Centre, while also serving as a Laboratory Assistant at the University of Toronto, providing him with a strong blend of commercial and scientific experience early in his career.
Across nearly two decades at AstraZeneca, he has built deep expertise in Global Marketing, Commercial Strategy, Product Launches, Brand Management, Portfolio Strategy, Alliance Management, Regional Commercial Leadership, Sales Leadership, Oncology, Respiratory Medicine, Biologics, Market Research, Commercial Excellence, Customer Insights, and Pharmaceutical Commercialization.
Velauthapillai holds a Master of Biotechnology from the University of Toronto, combining scientific knowledge with commercial leadership throughout his career.
