NEW YORK, N.Y., United States, May 2024 — The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Aysha E. Schomburg, J.D., as its new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective May 13, 2024. The NYSPCC Board of Directors, heralding the decision at a crucial juncture as the organization nears its 150th anniversary, cited Schomburg’s profound expertise in child welfare policy and her passionate commitment to improving the lives of children and families as pivotal for her selection.

Aysha Schomburg shared her vision for the future of the organization: “As a New York native, I’m thrilled to lead the NYSPCC as the nation’s oldest child-serving agency and help chart the way ahead to create a larger footprint. As an agent of change and staunch proponent of advancing equity, I am enthusiastic about the formidable work and future I hope to bring to the NYSPCC.”

Schomburg’s tenure at the United States Children’s Bureau (CB) as Associate Commissioner saw her spearheading significant initiatives, including the approval of over 45 Family First Prevention Plans aimed at keeping families at risk of child welfare involvement together. She has been a vital force in promoting the utilization of children’s Social Security benefits and enhancing access to housing support for former foster youth in collaboration with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Prior to her federal role, Schomburg was deeply involved with New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), where her efforts were crucial in shaping responses to the COVID-19 public health crisis in collaboration with the Department of Education and Department of Social Services.

Schomburg succeeds Muna Heaven, Esq., and Dr. Jacqueline Holloway, who served as interim leaders following Dr. Mary Pulido’s 20-year tenure as Executive Director.
