Western Cape, South Africa, February 2025 – Dr. Phumzile Mmope has joined the Western Cape Government as Chief Director People Training and Empowerment, bringing extensive expertise in training, leadership development, stakeholder engagement, and strategic communication. In her new role, she will lead initiatives to enhance workforce empowerment, talent development, and capacity building within the province.
Prior to joining Western Cape Government, Dr. Phumzile Mmope was the Founder and Owner of Dr. Phumzile Mmope Communications (Pty) Ltd, where she led a black female-owned integrated communications consultancy. She provided strategic advisory services across branding, corporate identity, digital media, and stakeholder engagement, helping organizations optimize communication strategies and drive impactful change.
Previously, she served as Senior Director at Stellenbosch University, where she played a pivotal role in institution-wide strategic communication and leadership projects. She conceptualized and designed the university’s first integrated communication strategy, leading to a revamped HR structure, business model, and internal communication channels. Her efforts received widespread recognition from the Rector’s Management Team and faculty leadership.
Before Stellenbosch, Dr. Mmope was Executive Director: Institutional Advancement at North-West University, where she developed and implemented the university’s advancement strategy and fundraising policy. She also served as Executive Director of Corporate Affairs and Relations, where she led a three-campus project to redefine the university’s brand positioning and corporate identity, ensuring widespread stakeholder alignment.
Earlier in her career, she held senior editorial and corporate media roles at the University of South Africa (Unisa) and worked as an Education, Health, and Court Reporter at Pretoria News. Her award-winning communication strategies and publications established her as a recognized leader in institutional branding and strategic communication.
With her extensive background in higher education, corporate affairs, and workforce training, Dr. Mmope is well-positioned to drive transformational leadership and professional development initiatives in her new role at Western Cape Government.
