With more than a decade of experience in executive search and talent acquisition for the financial services sector, Gary brings deep expertise in investment banking recruitment, strategic hiring, and leadership advisory.
In his new role, Gary will lead senior-level hiring and talent strategies for Apollo’s investment and corporate divisions, helping to attract world-class talent that aligns with the firm’s growth and innovation agenda. His appointment underscores Apollo’s continued commitment to building a strong, diverse, and high-performing global workforce.
Before joining Apollo, Gary McCool was at Goldman Sachs, where he served as Head of Investment Banking Executive Search & Lateral Recruiting – Americas. Over nearly four years, he played a pivotal role in hiring senior investment banking professionals across North America within the Global Banking & Markets division. Gary also advised business leaders on talent acquisition strategy, diversity and inclusion initiatives, human capital analytics, and competitor insights. His personalized, partnership-driven recruitment style helped hundreds of professionals transition into leadership roles across top investment banks.
Prior to Goldman Sachs, Gary worked as a Director at Options Group, a leading global executive search and consulting firm. There, he led strategic searches for financial services clients across capital markets, hedge funds, and alternative investments. His work focused on delivering data-driven, high-impact talent solutions across continents.
Earlier, Gary spent over six years at Selby Jennings, where he rose through multiple leadership positions including Director and Head of U.S. Corporate & Investment Banking Recruitment. In this capacity, he managed recruitment teams focused on placing investment banking and M&A professionals across major U.S. financial hubs. His leadership and market insight helped build Selby Jennings’ reputation as a top-tier talent partner in financial services.
Gary began his career in sales and advertising with Professional Sports Publications, gaining strong communication and client relationship management skills before transitioning into recruitment.
