Geneva, Switzerland, March 2026 — Barclays Private Bank International has announced the appointment of John Shipman as Chief Executive Officer of Barclays Bank (Suisse) SA. Based in Geneva, Shipman will lead the bank’s Swiss business and support the continued growth of Barclays’ private banking operations across key international wealth corridors.
Shipman brings more than 25 years of experience across private banking, commercial strategy, and risk management. In his new role, he will focus on strengthening Barclays’ presence in Switzerland while enhancing the firm’s ability to deliver tailored wealth management solutions to high-net-worth clients and global families.

Prior to joining Barclays, Shipman served at HSBC, where he most recently held the role of Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Private Bank (Suisse) SA and Country Head of HSBC Switzerland (a.i.). During his tenure, he led the Swiss private banking business while overseeing strategic initiatives across the region.
Earlier at HSBC, he served as Chief Risk Officer for Global Private Banking EMEA and HSBC Private Bank (Suisse) SA, where he was responsible for strengthening risk governance and regulatory oversight across private banking operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
He also held several Non-Executive Director roles within the HSBC Group, including Chair of HSBC Global Asset Management Switzerland Ltd, Director at HSBC Private Bank (Luxembourg) SA, and Vice-Chair of HSBC PB Services (Suisse) SA, contributing to governance and strategic oversight across the organization.
Earlier in his career, Shipman worked with UBS Investment Bank as Director – Operational Risk Control, and with Ernst & Young as Manager – Financial Services Risk Advisory, advising financial institutions on risk management and regulatory frameworks.
He began his professional journey with AMS Management Systems, where he held roles including Principal – Risk Management and Consultant in the Financial Services Practice, working across international markets including Toronto, Melbourne, and London.
With deep expertise spanning private banking leadership, risk management, and strategic governance, John Shipman brings extensive global experience to support the continued expansion of Barclays’ Swiss private banking platform.
