San Francisco, California, United States, November 2024 – Ritwik Kumar has been appointed as the Vice President, Machine Learning at Netflix. In this capacity, Ritwik will oversee advanced applications of machine learning, computer vision, graphics, generative AI, and data science to drive innovation in content production, localization, and promotion strategies.
Ritwik has been an integral part of Netflix for over seven years. Most recently, he served as Senior Director of Machine Learning, where he led teams focused on groundbreaking projects such as automatic artwork generation, high-quality machine translations, and predictive analytics for content performance. Earlier, as Director of Machine Learning, he played a pivotal role in developing solutions for intelligent routing, customer insights mining, and visual content optimization.
Before joining Netflix, Ritwik was Senior Engineering Manager for Machine Learning at Apple, where he spearheaded the development of AI and machine learning models to combat account takeovers, financial fraud, and piracy on platforms like the App Store and Apple Pay. His tenure at Apple was marked by the implementation of deep neural networks and innovative privacy-preserving technologies, resulting in multiple patents.
Prior to his industry roles, Ritwik worked as a Research Staff Member at IBM Research, focusing on predictive analytics and collaborative filtering. He also served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard University, where he contributed to the field of computer vision, inventing techniques for segmentation and classifier consensus.
Ritwik began his career in academia and research, holding teaching and research assistant roles at the University of Florida and Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology. His early work included internships at IBM and Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL), where he developed techniques for medical imaging and face recognition.
