Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, United States, July 2026 — UnitedHealth Group Optum has appointed Shobhit Varshney as its Chief AI Officer, entrusting him with the responsibility of bringing together the organization’s AI strategy, enterprise AI platform, and AI delivery under a unified vision. In his new role, he will lead the development, governance, and scaling of artificial intelligence across Optum and UnitedHealth Group, driving better health outcomes, reducing friction for patients and clinicians, and enabling a more intelligent, efficient, and responsible healthcare ecosystem.
Prior to joining UnitedHealth Group Optum, Shobhit served as Global Head of AI at Citi, where he led the bank’s enterprise-wide AI agenda. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, he was responsible for defining and executing the firm’s AI strategy, establishing its AI operating model, leading enterprise process transformation through agentic AI, strengthening Responsible AI governance, and creating an enterprise AI Command Center to oversee AI lifecycle management, risk monitoring, and regulatory compliance across the organization.
Earlier, Shobhit spent more than 13 years with IBM, where he built an exceptional leadership career across consulting, artificial intelligence, analytics, and enterprise transformation. Most recently, he served as Head of Data & AI, Vice President & Senior Partner, leading IBM Consulting’s Data, AI & Automation business across the United States, Canada, and Latin America with full P&L accountability for a multi-billion-dollar practice. Prior to that, he was Partner & Americas Head of AI, driving large-scale AI transformations for global enterprises including PepsiCo, Elevance Health, Merck, CVS Health, American Express, Toyota, Pfizer, AT&T, and several other Fortune 500 organizations. He began his IBM journey as Associate Partner & Consultant, helping establish the firm’s AI and advanced analytics capabilities across the Americas.
Before IBM, Shobhit served as Product Lead – Visualization & Analytics Group at Bloomberg, leading the development of advanced analytics and visualization capabilities for the Bloomberg Terminal. Earlier, he worked as a Software Architect at Intel Corporation, contributing to next-generation mobile technologies and filing a patent for Intel Smart Connect Technology. Demonstrating his entrepreneurial mindset, he also co-founded a green ready-mix concrete company in India, successfully scaling the business into a profitable manufacturing enterprise before transitioning operational leadership to his co-founder.
