Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, June 2024 – Tanya Wakelin has been named Director, Teaching and Learning at Durham College. Tanya’s extensive experience in education and eLearning positions her well to lead Durham College’s teaching and learning initiatives.
Tanya has been with Durham College for nearly eight years. Prior to her current role, she served as a Facilitator – Centre for Professional and Part-time Learning for 2 years and 6 months, delivering asynchronous curriculum development courses. Before that, she was the eLearning Manager – Centre for Teaching and Learning for 7 years and 2 months. In this role, Tanya guided faculty in high-quality online course and learning object development, provided support and training for learning management systems, multimedia, and educational technology, and directed the development of over 200 faculty professional development sessions.
At the provincial level, Tanya served as the elected chair of the Ontario College Educational Technology Committee (ETC) and as a member of eCampus Ontario’s Accessibility Advisory Group. At Durham College, she chaired the Digital Learning Steering Committee and Accessibility Coordinating Committee, and recently co-chaired the GenAI Taskforce. These experiences have enabled her to influence and foster high-quality, innovative education practices that are student-centered and aligned with the evolving demands of the workforce and needs of Durham College.
Before joining Durham College, Tanya was the eLearning Manager – Corporate Training Services at Durham College for 10 months, where she directed the development of online courses and programs supported by significant grant funding.
Tanya also spent 7 years at OUTDOORsmart!™ Inc., where she held several roles, including Education and Quality Manager and Quality Control and Compliance Manager. In these positions, she played a key role in managing education and quality control functions, contributing significantly to the organization’s growth and development.
Earlier in her career, Tanya worked in various educational roles, including Primary School Teacher at the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, Literacy Coordinator at the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board, and Educational Assistant at the Peel District School Board.
With campuses in Oshawa and Whitby, Durham College (DC) offers more than 12,000 full-time post-secondary and apprenticeship students access to more than 140 full-time and part-time programs in various disciplines, enabling them to develop the skills required to meet the demands of today’s job market. The college is also set to launch its first four-year degree program, the Honours Bachelor of Health Care Technology Management, in September 2018.
The Oshawa campus features the state-of-the-art Student Services building and will soon feature the Centre for Collaborative Education, a legacy project tied to DC’s 50th anniversary in 2017. The new facility will bring together local, Indigenous, and global communities, providing a new home for several of the college’s most innovative and ground-breaking programs.
