RGCIRC Appoints Dr. Dharmendra Singh Gangwar as Chief Executive Officer

New Delhi, India, April 2026 – RGCIRC (Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre) has announced the appointment of Dr. Dharmendra Singh Gangwar as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective April 1, 2026. Transitioning from his current role as the Chief Executive Officer , Dr. Gangwar is a distinguished Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and healthcare leader, with over 35 years of diverse leadership experience in pivotal roles, including the Secretary to Government of India.

His career spans senior positions in state, central, international organisations including the World Health Organization (WHO), and leadership roles in public sector enterprises. In addition to his government roles, Dr. Gangwar is currently serving as the President of AIIMS Rewari (Haryana), further underscoring his continued contribution to strengthening India’s healthcare infrastructure and academic institutions.

In his new role, Dr. Gangwar will also oversee RGCIRC’s clinical, operational, and strategic functions, with a focus on improving patient outcomes, expanding access to advanced oncology treatments, strengthening research and academic programmes, and enhancing institutional efficiency.

Speaking on his appointment, Dr. D. S. Gangwar said,

“It is an honour to take on this responsibility at RGCIRC, and a privilege to be part of a mission that’s larger than all of us – making quality cancer care accessible to all, no matter their socio-economic background. Building upon the Institute’s strong legacy in cancer care, I look forward to working closely with our clinical and administrative teams to further strengthen patient care, expand our services, and enhance our contribution to oncology research and public health.”

RGCIRC’s leadership expressed confidence that Dr. Gangwar’s extensive experience in governance, healthcare policy, and institutional leadership will guide the institute into its next phase of growth, further strengthening its position as a leading comprehensive cancer centre in India.

Speaking on the development, Chairman of the Governing Council at RGCIRC, Dr. Mr. Ashok Kumar Agarwal, expressed the promise the appointment holds. He said,

“Dr. Gangwar’s appointment marks a strategic step in strengthening RGCIRC’s governance and advancing its vision of delivering high-quality, patient-centred cancer care. He brings with him a unique combination of administrative, clinical, and policy expertise, all of which will be vital in leading a complex, multidisciplinary healthcare organisation such as RGCIRC.”

Established in 1996, RGCIRC (Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre) is one of Asia’s premier cancer care centres, renowned for its cutting-edge technology and expertise provided by super-specialists. Spread over nearly 2 Lakh square feet area, with a current capacity of 500+ beds at Rohini centre along with another facility centre at Niti Bagh. RGCIRC is one of the largest tertiary care centres in the continent. Having served over 3.5 lakh patients, the institute offers best-in-class techniques such as robotic surgery, Cyber-Knife, Tomotherapy, True Beam (the next generation Image-Guided Radiation Therapy), Intra-Operative Brachytherapy, and PET-MRI fusion. RGCIRC’s 14 state-of-the-art modular Operation Theatres and 5 minor Operation Theatres for day-care surgeries further underscore its commitment to excellence.

RGCIRC’s excellence in cancer care continues to garner prestigious recognition, with two major honors recently: the institute has received the ‘Outstanding Oncology Treatment Center Award’ at the 5th Healthcare Heroes Awards (an initiative by Jagran New Media and onlymyhealth.com) and the ‘Single Specialty Hospital of the Year’ title at the 15th MT (Medgate Today) India Healthcare Awards (in association with Medical Fair India and powered by Messe Düsseldorf Germany). These accolades complement RGCIRC’s existing distinctions. It has also been honored by Newsweek International’s Best Specialized Hospitals in Asia Pacific 2024 & 2025 and World’s Best Specialized Hospitals (2025), reinforcing its position as a global leader in oncology care. RGCIRC has also been ranked 1 in North India – Single Specialty Hospital by the All-India Critical Care Hospital Ranking Survey 2025 by The Times of India.
