Before taking on this position, Derek Ryder served as Senior Director – Digital/MarTech at Catalyst Brands LLC, where he played a key role in post-merger integration and strategic initiatives. During this phase, he helped lead the engineering organization through a complex merger, maintaining stability, aligning teams under a unified technical vision, and expanding leadership across marketing and creative technology, site content and experience, customer identity and data management, core platform APIs, site reliability engineering, and web analytics. He also helped establish full SRE support coverage for the Catalyst brand portfolio, drove the consolidation of digital asset management systems, and partnered on the architecture and implementation of a C360 customer data platform.
Prior to joining Catalyst Brands LLC, he was associated with JCPenney as Senior Director – Digital Engineering, Enterprise Pricing and B2B. In that role, he led a strategic turnaround by redefining the technology roadmap and execution approach in partnership with product and architecture leadership. He introduced a product management-centric framework for prioritization, modernized the e-commerce stack through infrastructure migration, reduced operational complexity through database transformation, and restructured the digital organization to improve communication and delivery velocity.
A major phase of Derek Ryder’s leadership journey was built at Best Buy, where he spent nearly eight years across multiple senior engineering and architecture roles. These included Director of Engineering – Online Experiences – Core Platforms and Operations, Director Engineering – Consumer Products – Online Experiences, Director Digital Engineering, Associate Director Digital Engineering, Associate Director Digital Architecture, and Senior Web Architect. During this period, he led critical eCommerce platforms, drove enterprise graph and data architecture initiatives, advanced DevOps and SRE practices, built new product engineering teams, supported mobile, voice, and IoT growth, and authored strategic roadmaps for core digital platforms. His work contributed to major revenue growth, platform modernization, and enterprise-wide digital transformation.
Earlier in his career, Derek Ryder worked with Object Partners Inc. as Consultant Lead/Project Lead/Architect/Engineering Lead, where he led consulting teams while architecting and delivering major technology projects for clients including Best Buy, GE, Boston Scientific, and MNSCU. Before that, he served as Senior Staff Analyst at Compuware Corporation, where he led the creation of a mission-critical electronic funds transfer application for the Minnesota Department of Revenue and helped drive technology modernization. He began his professional journey with AgPro Grain as Programmer/Analyst, where he quickly took ownership of system quality and delivered important business applications.
