The Essar Group, a diversified conglomerate, is embarking on a new phase of growth by investing billions of dollars in various sustainable initiatives, including green hydrogen plants, the world’s first green refinery, and initiatives for decarbonizing heavy trucks through LNG and electric ecosystems.
With a significantly reduced debt burden and a robust revenue stream exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore from existing businesses, Essar is poised for resurgence. Prashant Ruia, Director at Essar Capital, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable growth through decarbonization, decentralization, and digitalization investments.
These efforts aim to contribute to India’s climate commitments and promote green growth, aligning with global trends toward environmental sustainability. Essar plans to invest $3.6 billion in building low-carbon (blue hydrogen) plants, a green refinery, and a 1 gigawatt green hydrogen project in Gujarat.
Additionally, the company is focused on creating LNG and electric ecosystems to decarbonize long-haul heavy trucks and is exploring gas production from coal seams in West Bengal. Essar’s subsidiary, Essar Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Limited (EOGEPL), is one of the leader’s in India’s coal bed methane industry and aims to increase its contribution to the country’s total gas production.
While specific investment details in green mobility and hydrogen plants were not disclosed, Essar is committed to driving India’s energy transition and sustainable growth. The group’s diverse portfolio spans energy, metals and mining, infrastructure, services, and technology sectors. It has commercial interests in oil, gas, and coal bed methane exploration and production globally, along with oil refining and retailing in the UK and power generation in India and Canada.
With aggregate revenues of about $15 billion, Essar is strategically positioned to lead initiatives such as the UK’s first 1 GW blue hydrogen project and green hydrogen and ammonia production in Gujarat. The company is also investing in LNG infrastructure, including LNG trucking and fuel stations, as part of its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
