In his new role, Sunil Kumar will lead the overall strategic, operational, and commercial direction of the iconic seafront palace hotel, strengthening its position as one of India’s most celebrated luxury destinations. His appointment reflects The Leela’s commitment to crafted luxury, people-centric leadership, and elevated guest experiences.

Immediately prior to this appointment, Sunil Kumar served as General Manager at JW Marriott Kolkata, where he led the property through a period of strong market performance, brand consolidation, and service excellence. His tenure was marked by a sharp focus on experiential hospitality, F&B innovation, and high-impact banqueting and social events.

Before this, he held senior leadership roles within Marriott International, including General Manager at The Westin Goa and Hotel Manager at JW Marriott Juhu, where he successfully balanced resort-led leisure positioning with urban hospitality dynamics. His ability to reposition hotels, elevate brand presence, and drive sustained revenue growth has been a consistent hallmark of his career.

Earlier, Sunil Kumar built deep operational expertise through a series of progressive leadership roles at The St. Regis Mumbai, The Westin Pune, and across Westin Hotels & Resorts, spanning Director of Operations, EAM – Food & Beverage, EAM Rooms, and Director of Rooms roles. These experiences shaped his strong foundation in guest experience design, operational excellence, and people leadership.

He began his hospitality journey with foundational roles at Four Seasons, The Park Hotels, Grand Hyatt Mumbai, and JW Marriott Mumbai, steadily advancing across housekeeping, rooms, and operations leadership—developing a holistic understanding of luxury service delivery at scale.

Leadership Philosophy

Recognised for his strengths in F&B innovation, large-scale banqueting, and experiential social events, Sunil Kumar has successfully conceptualised and launched signature dining and lifestyle experiences that have transformed hotel positioning and delivered strong commercial outcomes.

A people-first leader, he is widely respected for building cultures of engagement, empowerment, and service authenticity. His leadership style emphasises visible presence, associate enablement, and attention to detail—reflected in exceptional engagement outcomes, including associate satisfaction scores as high as 98%.

His approach aligns seamlessly with The Leela’s ethos of crafted luxury, integrating sustainability, local sourcing, cultural connection, and community engagement into the guest journey while strengthening brand differentiation.

Beyond hospitality, Sunil Kumar is passionate about fitness, travel, global cultures, and art, and draws inspiration and balance from time spent with family—values that continue to shape his leadership vision and creativity.
