Amos Rex, the contemporary art museum in Helsinki, Finland, has announced Kieran Long as its new Museum Director, set to begin his role in early February 2024. Long’s appointment comes as a significant move for the museum, known for its dynamic role in Helsinki’s cultural landscape since its opening in 2018. He succeeds Kai Kartio, who has played a pivotal role in the museum’s development and will continue to serve as a Senior Advisor.
Kieran Long, a prominent figure in the art and design world, brings a rich background to Amos Rex. Before this appointment, he was the director of ArkDes, the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design. Long’s career spans several prestigious positions, including roles at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and as a leader of the curatorial team for the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale. His extensive experience is complemented by his contributions as a teacher, broadcaster, writer, and commentator.
Amos Rex has made a mark on the Helsinki art scene with its innovative approach to contemporary art, highlighted by notable exhibitions from artists such as teamLab, Studio Drift, Bill Viola, and Hans Op de Beeck. The museum also supports emerging talent through its Generation exhibitions, showcasing young artists aged 15 to 23.
The international search for a new director was led by Stefan Björkman, CEO of Konstsamfundet, and Chairman of Amos Rex’s board, with the aim of bringing fresh perspectives to Helsinki’s art scene. Long’s international background, including his British and Swedish heritage, is expected to add new dimensions to the museum’s offerings and its position within the broader art community.
