Malawi, August 2026 — Britam Insurance Malawi has appointed Maclonex Mwase as Chief Operations Officer (COO), marking a significant leadership elevation for the insurance professional after nearly 12 years with the company. The appointment builds on Mwase’s extensive experience across sales leadership, underwriting, bancassurance, broker management and insurance operations.
Mwase has been associated with Britam Insurance Malawi since November 2014, initially joining as Business Unit Manager. He subsequently progressed to Sales Manager – Brokers and Bancassurance in 2016, strengthening his experience across distribution channels and intermediary relationships. In 2018, he was elevated to Country Sales Manager, a position he held for more than eight years before assuming his new role as Chief Operations Officer in August 2026.
Before joining Britam, Mwase spent more than nine years with Nico General Insurance Company Limited Malawi, building his career in underwriting. He joined the company as an Underwriting Technician in 2005 and later progressed to Underwriting Supervisor before becoming Assistant Underwriting Manager in 2013. This experience provided him with a strong foundation across underwriting and core insurance operations before his transition into broader commercial and leadership responsibilities.
Beyond his corporate career, Mwase has contributed to the development of the wider insurance and financial services community. He served as President of the Council of the Insurance Institute of Malawi from 2018 to 2020 and as Chairperson of the Board at FUTURE SACCO Ltd from 2022 to 2024. He has also been associated with the Chartered Insurance Institute of London (CII) as a Goodwill Ambassador since 2019.
With more than 21 years of insurance industry experience, Mwase brings expertise spanning underwriting, sales, bancassurance, broker management, business leadership and insurance operations. His elevation to Chief Operations Officer represents the latest milestone in a career that has progressed from technical underwriting responsibilities to senior commercial and operational leadership.
