Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, August 2026 — Abbott India Limited has appointed Sudarshan Jain as Chairman of the Board, marking a significant leadership transition at the pharmaceutical company. Jain succeeds Munir Shaikh and brings more than four decades of healthcare and pharmaceutical industry experience to the chairmanship. Abbott’s official website lists Jain as an Independent Director and highlights his expertise across strategic management, corporate affairs, brand building and healthcare business operations.
Jain’s association with Abbott spans several chapters of his career. He served as Director – Marketing at Abbott India Limited for a decade and later as Managing Director, Healthcare Solutions at Abbott, where he led a business encompassing pharmaceuticals and healthcare solutions. He subsequently returned to Abbott India’s Board as an Independent Director in 2019. His second five-year term as Independent Director became effective in April 2022.
Beyond Abbott, Jain currently serves as Secretary General of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA), where he contributes to industry policy, healthcare access and the development of India’s pharmaceutical ecosystem. He is also Senior Advisor at EQT Group, Chairman of IIHMR University, Jaipur, and has held board and advisory responsibilities across healthcare and education. His career has included senior roles with organizations including Piramal, Johnson & Johnson and Lupin, giving him experience across pharmaceuticals, OTC products, diagnostics, hospitals and nutrition.
Earlier in his career, Jain served as Director – India Healthcare Business at Piramal Enterprises, with responsibility spanning commercial operations, manufacturing, supply chain, medical functions and R&D. He began his professional journey with Lupin in 1977 before moving to Johnson & Johnson and subsequently building a long career across Indian and multinational healthcare organizations. The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance describes him as a healthcare veteran with more than 45 years of industry experience and notes that he has been associated with more than 30 brands ranked among the top 300 in the Indian pharmaceutical market.
Alongside his corporate and industry leadership, Jain has maintained a strong connection with academia. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad). He has also served as visiting faculty at IIM Ahmedabad. His appointment as Chairman brings together extensive operating, governance, policy and academic experience as Abbott India enters its next phase of leadership.
